Abstract

704,931. Winding yarn. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. April 18, 1952 [April 26, 1951]. No. 9853/52. Class 120(2) A winding machine comprises means for supporting a package for rotation, means for winding yarn on the package, endfinding means for retrieving the loose end of yarn from the package, separate endfinding means for retrieving the end of the supply yarn, a knot-tier, means for applying both said yarn ends to the knottier, and means for operating the tier to unite the ends. The package P, being wound, is driven by surface contact with a traverse roll 10 on a shaft 11 rotated from a shaft 5 driven by an electric motor, the package being wound upon a tube C supported by a holder 24 on an arm 26, 27 rotatably carried in bearings 28. The main yarn y from supply, passes through a guide , slot 43 in a plate 42, then under elbowed fingers 61, through a guide 65, and thence between weighted discs 70 to slub catchers 95. It then passes under a guide plate 115, over the detector lever 625, under the guide 116, over the bail 415 and roll 10 to be taken up by'the package P. A spare yarn y' from another source of supply, is positioned on the shoulder 46 of the plate 42, across a lever 55 and thence to a transferring lever 120, to which it is held under tension by a spring-arm 121. The machine is started initially by depressing the lever 590 which rocks the shaft 592 to move a "sizing-lever" 595 on a rockshaft 435 to free a ratchet wheel 505 so that a gear 455 on a shaft 453 may free the rack bar 451 to descend and move the package-carrying arm 26, 27 to bring the tube C into contact with the roll 10, when a claw 521 is removed from a depression 518 in a disc 515 on the shaft 453 so that a snubbing-lever 572 withdraws a brake 570 from the disc 515, which brake during winding, prevents bouncing of the package P by braking its supporting mechanism. As winding begins, the lever 590 is released and the brake 570 is applied to the surface of the disc 515, to snub the package P, and a pawl 550, which prevents the rack 451 from moving downwards, during winding, is brought into contact with the ratchet-wheel 505. During winding, the control elements are maintained in their operative positions by a spring- urged detent lever 616 latched by a spring- urged lever 605 (not shown). When the yarn y breaks or fails, the lever 625 falls and rocks the shaft 620 to swing a yoke 635 and bring an arm 690 into a position to be engaged by one of the pins 695 on a constantly-driven member 478 to move a locking lever 685 from a shouldered disc 670 and permit 'the main-control cam shaft 475 to rotate. A cam 365 thereon, through a lever 367, then moves the package P on to a rest 360, to stop its rotation, and then swings it further, and into contact with a reversing roll 15. At the same time the lever 572 is moved to release the snubbing brake 570. by contact of a pin 581 with a lever 580 so that slight movement of the rack bar 451 may take place. A cam 310 on the shaft 475 also rocks a shaft 240 to cause a pin 245 (not shown) to slide open the cover 210 of a suction chamber 185 and an air-suction valve 190 is opened by a cam 205 to connect the chamber 185 with a source of suction to retrieve the yarn end from the package P. To assist in this process, a beater 370, driven by the roll 15 and controlled by the shaft 240, comes into operation to oscillate and wipe against the package to free the yarn end therefrom, the yarn end being prevented from wrapping the roll 10 by a brush 410. The yarn end retrieved from the package and lying in the suction chamber 185 is removed therefrom by an ejector 250 normally positioned with its beak 257 lying across the bottom of the chamber 185. The beak lifts the yarn end in loop-form and transfers it to a knotter 330 when the arm of the ejector is rotated by a rackbar 295 moved by linkage from the cam 310 on the shaft 475. The yarn loop is retained on the extension 256 of the ejector by cam-operated projection 265 which is withdrawn as the yarn is presented to the bill of the knotter 330, whereafter the ejector is -returned to a vertical position. The suction nozzle 155 (for the broken or spare yarn) the end being normally covered by a cap 181 having a finger 180, is now swung by gears 171, 172, operated by a cam 179 on the shaft 475, to take the broken yarn from the tension assembly. The finger 180 contacts a member 150 which is depressed and opens the cap 181 so that suction will draw the end of yarn extending to the slub catchers 95 into the nozzle 155, the slub catchers 95 being opened to release the yarn by blades on a shaft rocked by the nozzle, which shaft also opens the tension discs 70. The cap 181 now closes on the thread and the nozzle 155 is moved to carry the retrieved end to the knotter 330. While the tension discs 70 were open, compressed air from a pipe 82 and, at the same time, air from a pipe 88, is projected to clean both discs and slub catchers of lint &c., the supply of air being governed automatically by a valve 92 opened by a lever 433 from the rock shaft 435. The nozzle 155 swings beyond the knotter, to maintain yarn tension during tying, and the knotter is then operated by the lever 335 and link 334 operated by a cam 350 on the shaft 475. The nozzle 155 is then swung back and the cap 181 opened by a member 355 on the casing 296 to suck away one severed waste end of the knot through the nozzle 155, the other end waste end passing into the chamber 185. If the yarn y supply becomes exhausted, the detector fingers 61 swing to release latching means for the transforming lever 120 to enable the spare yarn y' to be fed into the guide slot 43 of the plate 42 when the nozzle 155 swings toward the centre of the tension-assembly. The yarn end y<SP>1</SP> is then taken up by the nozzle 155 and drawn laterally to thread it between the tension discs 70 and taken to the knotter 330, the movement of the nozzle 155 from the tensioning device resetting the spare-yarn transfer apparatus. If the knotting operation is not successfully accomplished, the latching lever 605 (not shown) is rocked by a cam 645 to bring a detent pin into contact with a second step on the lever 605 so that the end-finding and knot-tying mechanisms repeat their former operations. If the knotting is successful during the first or second attempt, the relevant mechanisms are re-cocked to their initialrelationships, but if knotting is not so achieved, the latching lever 605 (not shown) is completely.released from its detent so that the shaft 524 is rocked to lift the package P off its roll 10 and arrest the winding operation. The winding unit is then manually attended and upon correction of the fault the lever 590 is depressed to start the machine afresh. When the package has reached a predetermined size, the claw 521 on a lever 520 will fall into the recess 518 on the disc 515 to rock the shaft 435 and the lever 595. The shaft 524 is then rocked and the rack 451 moved to lift, the package P from the roll 10. In order that size-adjustment of packages may be effected, the position of the lever 450 may be adjusted angularly in regard to the arm 26, 27 by means of an adjustable connection at the bearing 28.
