Class 96 Paper or paper-board 31 which has been coated with a thermoplastic resin emulsion or a resin and a rubbery copolymer, from a roll 30 adjustably braked at 33, 34 passes about a guide roll 35 and a spreading roll 36 and, with the coated side uppermost, into the nip between a heated glossing roll 3, e.g. a mirror-finished chromium- or cadmium-plated, stainless steel or a glass- or vitreousenamelled iron or steel roll and a resilient-surfaced roll 20, e.g. of paper or cotton discs, or, for paper-board of sufficient thickness, a non-resilient roll, the two rolls 3, 20.being driven at the same surface speed, the paper, &c. being in contact over a substantial arc, e.g. at least 180 degrees of the glossing roll 3 and travelling a distance sufficient to allow the coating to cool below its softening point before meeting a roll 37,the paper then passing about a guide roll 40 and being wound up at 41. The glossed paper may be cooled, as by water-cooling the rolls 37 and 40. The roll 3 is driven from a motor 12 through gears 15, 16 &c. and the roll 20 is driven from the roll 3, either by way of a chain 62, sprocket 61, friction clutch (not shown in Fig. 1) and a roll 50 bearing against the roll 20, or by way of a chain 73, sprocket 74, friction clutch (also not shown in Fig. 1), gears 75, 96, chain 101 and sprocket 102. In each alternative form, the speed of drive is greater than is wanted at the roll 20 and the clutch is set to transmit less torque than that at the glossing nip, so that there is slight, but continuous slipping at the clutch, and the surface speeds at the nip are exactly the same. The roll 50 may be pressed upwardly by hudraulic pistons &c. 53. The nip between rolls 3 and 20 may be adjusted by micro-sets 103, and rods 6 limit the downward movement of the roll 20 if support from below is withdrawn. The roll 20 may, exceptionally, be refrigerated. Instead of the friction clutch drive, the surface speeds at the glossing nip may be made the same by a differential gear or by a photoelectric appliance. Specification 675,452 is referred to.
