[Also in Group VIII] In the operation of a machine for fracturing the coating on a web of paper to prevent curling of the paper, the web 8 passes from the reel 5 around a pair of jockey rolls 9 and 10 linked by a lever 11, over a pair of compensating rolls 12 and 13 the latter being adjustable relative to the framework, round a pair of adjustable rolls as at 14, over the outer projecting edges of fracturing blades 26, 27 secured to two sides of a triangular angle-iron frame 25 the third side of which is adjustably hinged to the framework, past a lever-mounted adjustable roll 15, around a guide roll 16, between the nip of a pair of driven draw rolls 17, 18, the second being rubbercovered, around a series of guide rolls 19-22 some of which are spring-loaded, then to the reel 7 which may be rotated by a friction drive indicated by a disc 23. In order to prevent damage to the paper there is provided a suction table comprising an endless conveyor band 28, running at a speed slightly in excess of the rate of travel of the web, and a suction box 30 having a foraminous wall 32 and connecting through a conduit 33 with a fan 34 the suction effect of which holds the web in frictional contact with the upper run 29 so that the two will run in company thus equalising the fracturing effort at the two blades.
