Abstract

704,050. High-frequency transmission lines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 25, 1952 [May 23, 1951], No. 10458/52. Class 40 (8) A transmission line comprises a first conductor 1 disposed substantially parallel to a second conductor 2, and spaced therefrom by a distance small compared to the operating wavelength, the widths of conductor 2 being at least twice as great as conductor 1 so that the distribution of the fields between the conductors is substantially the same as that between one conductor and the neutral plane in a normal two wire line. Conductors 1 and 2 may have a filling of dielectric material inserted between them. In a modification conductor 2 may have dielectric layers on each surface and thin conducting strips corresponding to conductor 1 are deposited on each dielectric surface by printed circuit methods. The transmission line may be matched to a coaxial line 3 by a bead 5 and a sloping section 6. Alternatively the diameters of the conductors may be changed in a tapered section for matching purposes, or a helical section can be inserted at the beginning of slope 6 for the same purpose. When linking the line to a wave guide the conductor 1 may be extended into the guide as a probe.
