Abstract

704,004. Moulds. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 7, 1951 [March 9, 1951], No. 5755/51. Class 83 (1) In precision casting by the lost-wax process, an open mould of coarse refractory material is formed by investing a wax pattern having a general configuration similar to that of the final pattern 3, thus forming a cavity 2 slightly larger than the final pattern, drying the investment and removing the wax, placing the final pattern 3 in the cavity so formed, and filling the space between the pattern and cavity with investment 5 of fine refractory material to provide the accurate moulding cavity. The minimum distance between the pattern 3 and the cavity 2 is from # inch to # inch. The coarse material may be fire-brick, silica sand and silica flour with an ethyl silicate liquid bonding mix, and the fine material may be a slurry formed of 100 c.cs. of liquid bonding agent to one pound of dry mix of 40 per cent silica flour, 55 per cent silica sand and 5 per cent accelerator. After pouring the fine investment 5 some coarse material 6 is added above it and the mould is vibrated to cause the coarse particles to penetrate the fine material. The composite slurry is then dried, the wax melted out and the mould baked at 1000‹ C. The final wax pattern may be coated with fine refractory material before being invested.
