Abstract

703,365. Transformers and inductors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 22, 1951 [April 7, 1950], No. 4300/51. Class 38 (2) To reduce noise level by permitting magnetostrictive longitudinal movement of its leg and yoke members, a magnetic core structure comprises winding leg and yoke members of stacked laminations assembled to form at least one rectangular loop having joints at the corners thereof, means for damping together the Laminations of each member substantially midway between the ends thereof, and means for holding together the ends of the laminations such as to prevent interlaminar vibrations but to permit said magnetostrictive movement. As shown, bolts 98, 100, 116 comprise the clamping means, and channel-section end frames 102, 104 the holding means, the spacing between the ends of the latter being determined by nuts 110, 112 and studs 106, 108. Insulation layers 90, 92 and lock plates 94, 96, the latter possibly being welded to the end frames at 120, may be provided for the leg members. 45 degree mitre joints are formed between the leg and yoke members, and there is provided a small gap in each joint to permit the magneto-strictive movement, which gap may be filled with a resilient cushioning member. In other embodiments a three-legged core is disclosed, together with a particular joint structure for such core.
