Abstract

703,213. Disc brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. Jan. 26, 1953 [Jan. 25, 1952], No. 2065/52. Class 103(1) In a disc brake of the type described in Specification 688,382 in which opposed friction pads are adapted to be urged into engagement by fluid pressure with opposite faces of a rotating disc at one or more points, the remainder of the disc being left open for cooling, the friction pads have the form of segments of a ring of rectangular crosssection and are guided for movement in a direction parallel to the axis of the brake disc in a fixed housing which straddles the outer edge of the disc, the pads being adapted to be urged into engagement with the disc by pistons working in hydraulic cylinders carried by the housing. An arcuate sheet metal brake housing a is adapted to straddle the periphery of a rotating brake disc b welded to a cranked ring q which is itself welded to the wheel r. The free edge of one side wall of the housing a is welded to the arcuate outer edge of the anchorage plate c secured .to a fixed part of the vehicle. Anchorage plate c is provided with a cranked flange d and a similar curved flange e is welded to the other wall of the housing a. Together with a curved pressing g, welded to the inner surface of the housing a, the flanges d and e serve as guides for segmental friction pads f, backed by rigid pressure plates m, which are hydraulically urged by projections l of pistons k to engage the opposite faces of the revolving disc b. Fig. 2 shows three pairs of friction pads and brake cylinders mounted in a common housing a, angular movement of the friction pads being prevented by radial U-shaped sheet metal plates h.
