Abstract
703,081. Indicating leakages in pipes. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Jan. 8, 1952 [Jan. 9, 1951], No. 591/51. Class 99 (2). [Also in Group XIII] In a double-walled tube for separating hot and cold fluids in a heat exchanger the walls are in face to face contact, at least one wall being grooved at the interface to provide a continuous space for leak detection purposes. In the composite tube shown, comprising closely interfitting tubes 11a, 12a, the external surface of the inner tube 11a is formed with annular and longitudinal grooves 17, 18 providing a continuous space within the wall into which fluid may leak in the event of corrosion of one or other of the tube walls. The leakage space may be connected to a suitable detecting or monitoring apparatus or to a suction system when the presence of the leak may be detected by the increase in pressure caused by the leak or by the presence of the leaking fluid in the suction system.
