Abstract
Hollow articles of aerated self-setting material are moulded by positioning a hollow thin-walled, open-ended former in each mould of a series of moulds in turn, placing a non-self-supporting mix prepared by aerating a mix containing cement or like self-setting material and a wetting agent between the outside of the former and the inside of the mould and filling the hollow of the former with loose particulate material, the former being taken out of each mould during or after the placing and filling operations and transferred to and positioned in the next mould while leaving the particulate material in situ at least until the mix has become self-supporting. The former may be of sheet steel or aluminium and designed for easy withdrawal by arranging, e.g. that its vertical faces are parallel to the vertical walls of the mould; and it may have suitable projections to aid its positioning in the mould and a withdrawal handle. Closed hollow articles, or articles with filled cores, may be moulded by first placing a layer of mix on the bottom of the mould, then placing the former on it and filling the former, then withdrawing the former and then spreading a layer of mix on the material in the mould; or the last step could be carried out by inverting the mould and placing it on a layer of mix already formed. The core material may be sand, sawdust, powdered chalk, flue dust, stone dust, or material with a high insulation value such as cork dust.
