Abstract
702,223. Combustion apparatus. BIGWOOD & SON, Ltd., J. Aug. 15, 1951 [Feb. 23, 1951], No. 4380/51. Class 51 (1). [Also in Groups XI and XXIX] Solid fuel combustion apparatus of the type in which combustion is effected by downwardly directing jets of air on to the free surface of the fuel in the combustion chamber wherein is provided an auxiliary air supply for promoting a slow rate of combustion during periods when the main air supply to the jets is shut off and means for controlling the auxiliary supply so that auxiliary air is only admitted when the main air supply is shut off. In the apparatus shown, which is constructed as described in Specification 702,213, the space beneath the grate is connected by a pipe 30 to an auxiliary air supply the pipe, which is housed between the outer casing of the apparatus and the outer wall of the double walled construction of the combustion chamber, being connected to a valve 33 which automatically controls the admission of air thereto. In the valve shown in Fig. 4 the pipe 30 is connected to a valve box 34 housing a hinged vane 35 which closes apertures 36 communicating with the atmosphere as long as the main air supply is passing through the duct 24 to the jet 25 in the combustion chamber. On relinquishment of the air pressure on the rear face of the vane 35 due to the shutting off of the main air supply it drops thereby allowing air from the atmosphere to enter the pipe 30 in the box. In an alternative valve form (Fig. 6) a piston-like member 44 is arranged to slide within a cylindrical casing 38 the interior of which is connected to the main air duct 24 by a pipe 41. Apertures 47 are formed in the casing 38 opening to the atmosphere and the piston is so shaped that when the main air supply is " on " it closes the pipe 30. When the main air supply is switched " off " the air pressure drops in the pipe 41 allowing the piston to drop and thereby letting air which has entered the casing via the apertures 47 pass to the pipe 30. An adjusting screw 48 is provided such that the distance travelled by the piston when it descends may be regulated thereby regulating the amount of auxiliary air passing to the pipe 30 and hence the grate. In the valve shown in Fig. 5 the piston is replaced by a flap 49. Specification 579,324 also is referred to.
