Abstract

702,198. Cathode-ray tubes. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. May 2, 1949, No. 11650/49. Addition to 684,552, [Group XL(c)], Class 39(1) [Also in Group XL(c)] In a multistable cathode-ray circuit arrangement as claimed in claim 1 of the parent Specification, the cathode tube has a supplementary collecting electrode 10 or 13 which is connected through a resistance 11, 14 to a source of positive voltage and through a series capacity 12, 15 to one member of a pair of deflecting plates 2, 3 so that when the beam moving in one direction through a series of stable positions impinges on the supplementary collecting electrode 10 or 13 it gives rise to such changes in the deflecting voltage that it first continues its movement and then flies back in the opposite direction, there being no amplifier in the feedback circuit. In the arrangement shown supplementary electrodes 10, 13 are coupled to deflecting plates 2, 3 via condensers 12, 15 respectively, and electrode 5 is connected direct to deflecting plate 2. Electrode 4 is an apertured plate or a number of separate plates coupled together. In operation by applying positive pulses to the deflecting plates 3 the beam, initially at D say, may be successively shifted to stable positions C, B, A, Fig. 3, and when a further pulse is applied the beam strikes electrode 10 and the resulting variation in feedback shifts the beam back to D immediately. Similarly by applying negative pulses to the deflecting plate 3 the beam initially at A say, may be moved successively to B, C, D, then to electrode 13 and as a result is then moved immediately back to A. These effects are explained theoretically by a displacement of the feedback current-deflection voltage curve b, Fig. 3, to a dotted line position such as b<SP>1</SP>, so that only one stable position such as D<SP>1</SP> remains. The two supplementary electrodes 10, 13 may be secondary emissive, in which case the connections between them and the deflecting plates 2, 3 are interchanged, i.e. 10 is connected to' 3 and' 13 to 2. Specification 702,263 is referred to.
