Description

LBETHENOD. GENERATOR 0F SUSTAINED ELECTRIC OSCILLATIONS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB- H. 1917- 1,257,971. Patented Mar. 5,1918.
Inventor:
Attorney.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BETHENOD, OF IPARIS, FRANCE.
GENERATOR OF SUSTAINED ELECTRIC OSOILLA'IIONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1918.
Application filed February 17, 1917. Serial No. 149,360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BETHENOD, a citizen of the Republic of France, residin at 10 Rue Auber, Paris, in the Republic 0 France,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Generators of Sustained Electric Oscillations, of which the following is a specification.
Generators of sustained electric oscillations applicable to wireless telegraphy and telephony, utilizing the properties of vacuum tubes, are already known, but heretofore such generators have only been able to furnish a comparatively low power per tube, which considerably restricts their application.
The present invention relates to an improvedarrangement of apparatus for a genorator, of sustained oscillations the invention being based on the rational utilization of the properties of the cathode rays, thereby enabling the power brought into play to be materially increased, without having recourse to a number of tubes arranged in parallel.
I will describe with reference to the accompanying drawing an arrangement of apparatus in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawing 1 is a cathode tube of suitable form, having a suitable vacuum, usually as high as possible, and an electrode 2 adapted to emit cathode rays, by the use of substances favorable to cathode omissions such substances being alkalineearthy oxids, lime, etc., or ultra-violet light,
etc.
On account of the accelerating action of the field created by the generating dynamo 3between the cathode 2 and the two electrodes 5 and 5 the negative charges emitted pass bQtWGGHytWO plates 4 and 4, which form, in a sense, the coatings of a condenser, and which are connected to the ends of one winding 7 of a transformer, of which the other winding 6 has its middle point connected to the positive pole of the generating dynamo 3. The ends of the second winding tare connected to the anodes 5 and 5'. Under these circumstances, it is obvious that at a given instant the condenser formed by the plates 4 and 4' is charged sufiiciently to concentrate the cathodic beam on the anode 5. This displacement effects a reversal of the electric field, and results in the extremity of the cathode beam oscillating very rapidly between the anodes 5 and 5'. The continual reversal of the electro-motive force thus induced in the coil 7 may be utilized by arranging for example a condenser 8 across the terminals of this coil, in such a way as to form an oscillating circuit in which an undamped high-frequency current will arise. A condenser 9 may be arranged across the terminals of the generator 3 to obviate the passage of any high-frequency current. Obviously, the coupling of the generator thus constituted with the external circuit may be effected in any suitable manner, without departing from the nature of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising in combination a highly evacuated cathode tube, two anodes therein, a transformer having its primary connected to the anodes, a capacity in the cathode tube connected to the secondary of the transformerand an electric generator connected to the primary winding of the transformer and to the cathode in the cathode tube.
2. Apparatus for the purpose set forth, comprising in combination, a cathode tube, two anodes in said tube and forming a plurality of circuits for the cathodic beam, means to oscillate said cathode beam between the anodes said means forming an oscillating circuit passing through and interrupted in the cathode tube and including the second ary of a transformer, a second oscillating circuit connected to the transformer secondary winding an electric generator connected to the transformer primary and the cathode in the tube and a capacity in the generator ciigcuit arranged in parallel to the cathode tu e.
In testimony whereof .I afiix my signature in presence of two-witnesses.
