Abstract

Compositions capable of hardening in the cold comprise at least one hardener (for liquid phenol-aldehyde condensates), at least one aryloxy-compound of a monohydric phenol and a chlorinated aliphatic alcohol, and a liquid condensate obtained by condensing, in an alkaline medium, formaldehyde with at least one mononuclear monohydric phenol. Hardeners specified are acid or neutral persulphates, titanium sulphate, lead and manganese dioxides, para-toluene sulphochloride, b -naphthalenesulphochloride, dichloromethylmetalxylol, dibenzylsulphate and 1:5 naphthalene-disulphonic acid. Fillers specified are quartz powder, barium sulphate, graphite, silicon and silicon carbide. Other additives specified are aliphatic esters of inorganic acids and halogenated aliphatic alcohols, e.g. dichloropropanol, dichlorohydrin, ethylene chlorohydrin; trimethyl- and triethyl-phosphates, and aldehydes, e.g. formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde, either alone or in admixture with each other. The aryloxy compounds specified are obtained by condensing phenol, isomeric cresols or xylenols or a - or b -naphthol with 1:3-dichloropropanol, epichlorhydrin or tertiary -dichloro-isobutanol. The compositions may be made either (a) by mixing the hardener(s) with the filler(s) and mixing the resulting powder with the liquid condensate and aryloxy compound(s), or (b) by separately making up two parts to be mixed prior to use, one part consisting of the hardener and the filler and the other part consisting of the liquid condensate and the aryloxy compound. The preferred liquid condensate is prepared in the manner described in Specification 702,142, [Group IV (a)], which is referred to. Examples are given.ALSO:Aryloxy compounds are obtained by condensing at least one monohydric phenol with at least one chlorinated aliphatic alcohol in an alkaline medium, e.g. dichloropropanol is condensed with phenol according to the equation: C6H5OH + CH2Cl-CH(OH).CH2Cl= C6H5-O-CH2-CH(OH)-CH2Cl + HCl Other reactants specified are isomeric cresols and xylenols, a - and b -naphthols, epichlorhydrin and tertiary dichloroisobutyl alcohol.
