Abstract

700,924. En-masse conveyers. REDLER CONVEYORS, Ltd. March 27, 1952 [March 30, 1951], No. 7461/51. Class 78 (1). An endless tension member having laterally extending flights is arranged in a conveying casing and passes around a reversing member before entering the casing, and an inlet for granular material is arranged at a point in advance of the reversing member, the arrangement being such that material from the inlet is guided around the reversing member such that on entering the conveying casing it enters a clear space between the bottom of the conveyer flights and the bottom of the casing where it is sandwiched and caused to move along the casing by the movement of the flights. As shown, fibrous material passes from a supply hopper 40 on to the upper run of an endless tension member 18 which conveys the material in normal manner along a plate 29 within a casing 10 until it reaches a drum 19 at the end of this run. The material is then guided around drum 19 by a plate 38 bent into a semi-circle so that the material is now beneath the tension member in the space 45 between the tension member and the smooth bottom 11 of a trough containing the lower run of the tension member. The material passes up a ramp 39 so that the weight of the tension member, which comprises a central chain member having flights at each side, presses the flights slightly into the material to cause it to slide along the bottom 11. The flights may have a serrated lower edge to increase frictional grip on the material. The material is discharged at a plurality of intermediate discharge sections 16 and a final discharge section 17. Each section 16 has an opening 52 the after edge of which comprises a curved plate 47. When the material in a receiving bin 49 piles up to the opening 52 at its natural angle of repose the gently curved portion 48 of plate 47 prevents any tendency to force more material through the opening 52. The final discharge section 17 has bent out side walls 55,56 to increase the trough area whereby to ensure complete discharge of the material through the opening 54. Beyond the end roller 20 which is driven the tension member passes around an upper roller 21 from which it hangs in a catenery portion 27 for a part of the return run so that its weight provides tension, the remainder of the return run being supported on a guide 28 carried by inverted U-brackets 53 supported on angles 57 secured to the side walls of the casing 10. The conveyer may be inclined up to 60-70 degrees and still convey in the same manner, the reduction in effective weight of the tension member being compensated by increased packing effect of the material.
