Abstract

700,902. Non-compression engines; ignition; valves and valve-gear; regulating. ALDRED, E. W. June 9, 1950 [June 10, 1949], No. 15550/49. Classes 7(2), 7(4) and 7(6) In an atmospheric two-stroke engine the necessary cylinder vacuum is effected by a fuel flame jet 31 sucked during piston outstroke and together with combustion air into the cylinder 1 through a port 11 closed as by a slide valve 12 when the outstroke is ending to seal off the cylinder during piston instroke. The valve 12 is actuated by a cam on the engine crankshaft and opens substantially as piston outstroke commences. Additional combustion air is admitted by a valve 10 held open by a spring 15 during piston outstroke, sucked closed when the operative cylinder vacuum is formed upon closure of the valve 12, and remaining closed until the valve 12 again opens. The maximum opening of the valve 10 may be limited in accordance with engine speed by a linkage (not shown) controlled by an enginedriven governor 25. According to the Provisional Specification the cylinder may be water or air cooled and the invention is applicable to multi-cylinder engines.
