Abstract

Classes 36 and 38 (1) A cable comprises a conductor 2 having an insulating sheath 4 within a non-waterproof, flexible metallic conduit 20 and a waterproof coating 40, and is provided with a connecting device which includes a metal ferrule 24 fitted over the end of the cable and then inwardly deformed to form a watertight joint with the coating 40. The conduit 20 may be spaced from the insulation 4, and formed of a spiral strip having interlocking edges. This may be surrounded by a screen 22 of braided copper wire over which the coating 40 is extruded. The ferrule 24 is positioned over the end of coating 40 and connected to screen 22 by solder 26. The end of the conductor 2 is connected to a resilient terminal 6 through a metal sleeve 12 enclosed within a ceramic sleeve 8. A flexible insulating sleeve 28 is fitted between the insulation 4 and conduit 20 and is provided with a flange 30. When the cable is positioned, for example on a sparking plug, an internally-threaded nut 46 engages flange 44 on ferrule 24 and is screwed on to the sparking plug, compressing spring 36 and thus holding terminal 6 against its co-operating terminal and flange 30 against a co-operating part to form a watertight seal.
