Abstract

700,182. Supercharging. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.- GES. Nov. 28, 1950 [Jan. 3, 1950], No. 29103/50. Class 7(2) In a four-stroke internal-combustion engine 14 supercharged by an exhaustgas turbo-blower 12, wherein the exhaust gases are arranged to flow through at least one duct 1 or 2 of predetermined length to a receiver 5, a diffuser 3 or 4 is provided between the receiver and the receiver end of the duct, the receiver outlet being connected to convey the gases to the turbine inlet so that in operation the pressure in the turbine inlet is more nearly constant than the pressure in the duct with the result that negative pressure impulses are reflected from the receiver 5 along the duct to assist in exhausting the engine cylinders. The engine has two exhaust ducts 1, 2 each of which is connected to three engine cylinders, whilst the exhaust gases pass from the receiver 5 through pipes 6, 7 to act upon the turbine rotor 8, which drives the blower 12 that supplies air or mixture to the engine 14. When using a single duct the individual pressure impulses and the returning negative pressure impulses assist one another. In a modification, the diffusers have non-return valves incorporated at their point of entry into the receiver to prevent exhaust gases passing back into the exhaust ducts.
