Abstract
A method of producing monocalcium phosphate comprises forming a solution of strong phosphoric acid containing dissolved monocalcium phosphate, flowing said solution in a closed circuit, contacting the solution at a temperature of from 78 DEG C-125 DEG C with phosphate rock in one section of the circuit so as to dissolve the rock and increase the monocalcium phosphate content thereof, flowing the monophosphate-enriched solution to another section of the circuit, and there reducing the temperature sufficiently to crystallize a portion of the dissolved monocalcium phosphate and separating the solid monocalcium phosphate from the solution of phosphoric acid containing monocalcium phosphate, the monocalcium phosphate-depleted solution from the crystallizing step, after restoring the phosphoric acid content to substantially its original value, being employed for the further treatment of phosphate rock in the circuit. The separated solid monocalcium phosphate may be hydrolyzed to dicalcium phosphate and phosphoric acid, the latter being returned to the monocalcium phosphate-depleted solution from the crystallizing step. Additional phosphoric acid may be added to replace that consumed during the process, or sulphuric acid may be added, producing phosphoric acid and calcium sulphate which is separated from the solution. Sulphuric acid may also be employed to digest the residue of phosphate rock insoluble in phosphoric acid, thus producing a further quantity of phosphoric acid for use in the process.
