Abstract

699,859. Preparing fibres for spinning; spinning machines. T.M.M. (RESEARCH), Ltd. May 15, 1951 [May 30, 1950; May 30, 1950], Nos. 13463/50 and 13464/50. Classes 120(i), 120(ii) and 120(iii) The invention relates to roller apparatus of textile processing machines of the kind in which a continuous body of fibres. is conducted through the nip of a yieldable pair of rollers which condense or compress the fibre body, as with the calender rollers of a carding engine, draw frame or combing machine, or which grip and draw the fibres forward, as in a draw frame or spinning machine; means is provided, independent of the rollers, which are effective to condense the fibres and control them in all lateral directions until they reach a position near to the point of closest approach of a pair of rollers, and thereafter positively to control the fibres axially of the rollers at least as far as the said point. As shown, Fig. 3, the calender rollers 1, 2 of a sliver-coiling apparatus are formed with narrow circumferential tongues 3, 4, between which the sliver is passed. The usual trumpet guide 13 is provided with an extension conductor 16 the chamfered end 17, of which is bifurcated; the inner surface 23 of each bifurcation lies close to the corresponding sides of tongues 3, 4 so as to positively guide the fibres into and through the nip of the tongues. Roller 1 is in fixed bearings, whilst roller 2 is mounted in a bracket pivoted at one end and urged by spring or other means towards roller 1. Where rollers 1, 2 operate an electric stop motion, at least the parts of the conductor which contact the rollers are made of insulating material. In a modification, only one roller is tongued and the bifurcations of the conductor are cut away in concave form so as to conform to the surface of the plain roller and restrict its working surface to the width of the tongue on the other roller. In the drawing head of a spinning frame, Fig. 11, a tubular conductor comprises two or more sections 35, 36 cut away to receive tongued drafting rollers 28, 29, 30, 31 and arranged telescopically to permit variations in the spacing of the rollers; in another arrangement a single tubular conductor is cut away to receive three pairs of tongued drafting rollers. In a further arrangement, Fig. 13, the fibre strand is delivered by travelling aprons 39, 40 to a condenser 41 having spaced side walls 42 co-operating with the tongues 37a, 38a of rollers 37, 38. Other arrangements utilize a single apron and a single tongued roller; also, the condenser may be provided with a detachable mouth portion which can be replaced by another of different length or shape if desired. In a still further arrangement, condensers such as 41 co-operate with successive pairs of drafting rollers and a channel-section conductor extends between the two guides.
