Abstract
509,493. Spinning yarn directly from slivers of bast and long - leaf fibres. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P. Oct. 9, 1937, No. 24645. [Class 120 (ii)] In spinning flax, hemp, jute, and like slivers into yarns by using slip-draft devices as described in Specification 407,690, the sliver is supported over a length at least equal to a quarter of the reach by a roller which is grooved so as to restrict the spreading of the sliver. As shown in Fig. 1, a single driven grooved roller 24 is used and a condenser 26 is arranged relatively thereto so as to bear hardly on the sliver and thereby to exercise a slip-draft effect. Arrangements are described wherein more than one roller is used, the condenser serving only as a conductor, and, as shown in Fig. 4, an adjustable roller 36 is mounted between two driver rollers 35, 37, the drawing-roller 12 being of reduced diameter to permit the close arrangement of the roller 37 and the consequent omission of the condenser. The grooves may be U-shaped or rectangular, or may be, in effect two grooves united by a U-shaped or semicircular rib, Fig. 5... 8 (not shown). The Provisional Specification describes also the use of one of the retaining-rollers as a slipdraft roller, it being made larger than usual and rollers being provided to ensure contact of the sliver therewith ; and also the use of a large intermediate slip-draft roller with a plain surface.
