Abstract

699,778. Lubricating. ROTAX, Ltd. July 2, 1952 [July 23, 1951], No. 17375/51. Class 12 (iii). A screw-jack mechanism of the kind comprising a rotatable screw driven through gearing and a screw-threaded sleeve engaging the screw, is lubricated by means of a grease pump contained in the screw, which is hollow, the pump being operable intermittently by the sleeve. As shown, a hollow screw a is provided with a pump cylinder b having an inlet e in communication with a preserver for grease, and an outlet d leading to orifices e in one of the threads of the screw. The cylinder is provided with a non- return valve f. A plunger g is formed on one end of a rod h which towards the other end is engaged by a spring i in a thimble j. A reduced portion k of the rod extends through the end of the thimble and through a washer q carried by the sleeve r. The thimble has a flanged end abutting against a washer m, and a spring n is located between this washer and a washer o secured to the screw a. When the sleeve is moved outwardly the plunger g moves to allow grease to enter the pump cylinder. On return of the sleeve the plunger g closes the pump inlet and then discharges a quantity of grease to the screw.
