Abstract
699,687. Making turbine blades. HERON, J. A. Aug. 13, 1951 [May 19, 1950], No. 12600/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Forging.-A method of hot-pressing articles such as turbine or compressor blades to shape between dies is characterized in that the article is maintained at the forging temperature range by electrical-induction-heated dies, the electrical input being regulated by thermo-sensitive heads in the vicinity of the die surfaces to maintain the temperature substantially constant within said range during the operation. Apparatus for carrying out the invention comprises a vertical hydraulic press having upper and lower platens 1, 2 respectively on which are mounted upper and lower bolsters 3, 4 carrying dies 5, 6 of frusto-pyramidal form secured to the bolsters by wedges 10. A pipe 7 supplies liquid coolant to conduits 8 in the bolster 3 and a pipe 9 similarly supplies coolant to the bolster 4. Each die is surrounded by a high-frequency induction coil unit 13, 14 carried on the respective bolster by an insulating block 15, 16 and each unit comprises coils of copper tubing 17 bound with glass tape 18, liquid coolant being passed through the tubing. The two units are connected by a flexible hose 19 and a flexible electrical connection 20. The blades are forged from aluminium-bronze bar stock 21, containing up to 12 per cent aluminium, in one operation of the press. The temperature of the forming surfaces 11, 12 of the dies is held at the forging temperature by inset thermo-couples connected to regulators controlling the high-frequency input to the coil units. The dies may be of high chromium, high nickel austenitic steel, cobalt base alloys containing tungsten, or nickel chromium alloys having a creep strength in the temperature range 750-850‹ C. of about 8-15 tons per square inch.
