Abstract

1,255,112. Working at specified temperatures; making wheels; forging. IIT RESEARCH INSTITUTE. 17 April, 1970 [7 May, 1969], No. 18452/70. Headings B3A, B3H and B3V. Titanium and titanium alloy workpieces are forged by heated tools at a temperature in the range 1400‹ to 1950‹ F. and controlling the rate of deformation such that the exerted pressure does not exceed the yield strength of the tools at that temperature. The temperature of the tool is the same as or lower than that of the workpiece. The forging dies are made of nickel or cobalt superalloys. The titanium alloy may contain 6% aluminium, 6% vanadium, 2% tin, or 8% aluminium, 1% molybdenum, 1% vanadium, or 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium. These alloys exhibit sensitivity to strain rate, i.e. yield strength increases with strain rate, so the press rate in forging must be low, such as less than 10 inches per minute and may vary. The dies are heated by external induction coils and the work pieces lubricated by glass or graphite. The process may produce an aeroplane nose wheel.
