Abstract
698,432. Pencil holders; pens. SCRIPTO, Inc. Jan. 25, 1951.. No. 1970/51. Class 146 (iii). A writing instrument comprises a barrel, a feed mechanism for feeding a marking element to the writing end of the barrel, the feed mechanism including a rotatable, longitudinally slotted guide tube, and a friction member having a key portion engaging the longitudinal slot in the guide tube and arcuate arm portions extending from said key portion for frictional engagement with the interior of said barrel for restraining rotation of said guide tube. The marking element 12, for example, a pencil lead or ball-point pen, is carried in sleeve 18 slidable longitudinally of a guide tube 16, the lower end of the sleeve 18 having a slot 35 to cause resilient gripping of the marking element. A wider slot 36 extending into an inclined continuation 37 is disposed above the slot 35, a flange 38 being formed along the lower edge of the continuation which extends into a slot 39 which permits the insertion of a propelling member 19. The member 19 has a portion 32 having thread segments 33 projecting through the slot in the guide tube 16 into engagement with a screw thread 25 in the barrel. A friction member 44 having a grooved portion 46 engaging the slot in the guide tube, comprises arcuate arm portions 47 frictionally engaging a base 45 in the barrel and terminating in flat portions 48 which engage the tube 16, such that rotation of the tube 16 is frictionally restrained. The tube 16 is rotatable by a cap 14 having a lug 26 engaging the slot in the tube 16, the cap being secured against axial displacement by a sleeve 13 screwed to the barrel. Rotation of the cap 14 causes longitudinal movement of the sleeve 18 in the tube 16 by reason of a lug 40 on the member 19 engaging the flange 38 until the sleeve 18 abuts a shoulder 21 in the barrel. Further rotation causes the flange 38 to be rotated by the lug 40 into a notch 43 in the tube 16, thus permitting the member 19 to eject the element 12 from the sleeve 18, the lug 40 sliding axially down the slot 36.
