Abstract

697,423. Tube expanders. HYDROPRESS, Inc. Aug. 8, 1951 [Aug. 11, 1950], No. 18657/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XIX] Stamping.-In a hydraulic machine for belling, expanding or testing tubes, the tube is supported in a plurality of openable dies, which surround the tube, and is belled by fixed and movable tools which also seal the ends of the tube. The tubes may be inserted into the machine by hydraulically actuated pivoted arms and aligned with the dies by hydraulic jacks. The tube is supported by similar tool heads 46 one of which is fixed and one movable by an electromotor. Each head comprises a hydraulic ram 43 carrying a tool 18 with a seating ring 47, a packing ring 50 to which hydraulic pressure may be applied and a belling ring 51 which may be slotted for the admission of hydraulic pressure. The tube is surrounded by split dies 23, 24 closed about the tube by a cylinder 27. Blocks 33 are lowered by a cylinder 34 to lock the dies. The tube is centralized in the die by spring-urged pins. Some of the dies house the tube lifting jacks. The end dies have an axial locking device engaging the frame to prevent end movement and alternate dies are fitted with blocks to engage a closed die to lock them against axial movement. In operation, the ends of the tubes are closed by the tools 18 and pressure is applied to the ram 43 to seal the end of the tube and to effect belling. Pressure through a channel 59 expands the tube to the internal diameter of the dies. To provide a follow-up mechanism due to the shortening of the tube hydraulic pressure is exerted on the end of the ram 43. Excessive follow-up for small tubes is avoided by decreasing the effective area of the ram by securing non- pressurized extensions 61 on the ram. Rings on the dies, Fig. 10, not shown, strip a belled tube which has not been expanded. For testing purposes the dies are opened to allow the tube to be supported by the jacks and hydraulic pressure is applied.
