Abstract

N-Glycoside compounds of aliphatic amines containing 12 or more carbon atoms are prepared by heating the amine, e.g. pentadecylamine, heptadecylamine or stearylamine, with an equimolecular quantity of a sugar, e.g. d-glucose or lactose, or with dextrine, the heating being effected for a short time, if desired in vacuo or in organic solvents, until reaction is complete. In examples (I) heptadecylamine and d-glucose are heated to the boiling point in methanol for 30 minutes and the solution is filtered and cooled, whereupon the N-glycoside is precipitated; (II) glucose hydrate is fused with a small quantity of water, then cooled to 50-60 DEG C. and heptadecylamine is added; the mixture is then heated to 80 DEG C. with agitation, water is added and the mixture heated in vacuo; finally the product is cooled, and the solidified mass is reduced to fine particles.ALSO:Natural or artificial filaments, fibres, yarns, fabrics or felts are given a silk-like touch by impregnating with an aqueous solution of an N-glycoside compound of an aliphatic amine containing 12 or more carbon atoms, heating the moistened material to at least 60 DEG C. to cause cleavage of the N-glycoside compound into an insoluble amine and a sugar, and subsequently washing out the sugar. The N-glycoside compounds may be prepared by heating the aliphatic amine, e.g. pentadecylamine, heptadecylamine or stearylamine, with an equimolecular quantity of a sugar, e.g. d-glucose or lactose, or with dextrine (see Group IV (b)).
