Abstract

A solution or dispersion for stiffening textiles is made from an aqueous solution of formaldehyde or a water-soluble source of formaldehyde which yields formaldehyde on heating and an ammonium or amine salt of a copolymer of styrene or a substituted styrene with maleic anhydride or a partial ester of maleic acid, the formaldehyde or source thereof being 1-20 per cent of the copolymer salt. The salt is deposited on the textile in an amount from 2-15 per cent by weight, the treated textile then being heated to form an insoluble resin thereon. The copolymer salts include those of guanidine, methyl-, butyl- and amylamines and phenyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide. As sources of formaldehyde paraformaldehyde and trioxane; as substituted styrenes, methyl-, butyl-, and chloro-styrenes; and as a partial maleic ester, mono isopropyl maleate are specified. Minor amounts of vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl ethyl ether, indene, vinyl methyl ketone and acrylic esters may be copolymerized in the styrene copolymer. The process may be carried out on fibres, yarn or fabrics of cotton, viscose rayon, acetate rayon, nylon, glass, linen, flax, hemp, jute, ramie, wool, silk, cuprammonium rayon, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and the substance known as Aralac. Specification 431,704 is referred to.ALSO:Textile materials are stiffened by treating with an aqueous solution or dispersion of formaldehyde or a water-soluble source of formaldehyde and an ammonium or amine salt of a copolymer of styrene or a substituted styrene with maleic anhydride or a mono ester of maleic acid, the formaldehyde or source thereof being 1-20 per cent of the copolymer salt and 2-15 per cent of the salt being deposited on the textile, which is then heated to give an insoluble resin. The process may be carried out on fibres, yarns or fabrics of cotton, viscose or acetate rayon, nylon, glass, linen, flax, hemp, jute, ramie, wool, silk, cuprammonium rayon, vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer and the substance known as Aralac. Specification 431,704 is referred to.
