Abstract
Streptomycin, salts of streptomycin, dihydrostreptomycin and salts of dihydrostreptomycin are irreversibly decolorized by treating a solution of a compound of said group under acidic conditions in a solvent medium with an oxidizing agent selected from chlorine, potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide and sodium dichromate until maximum decolorization is effected. The solutions are aqueous, aqueous alcoholic or alcoholic. The pH is 1.5 to 6.0, obtained by addition of a suitable acid or produced by bubbling the chlorine through a neutral solution. Preferably, methanolic solutions are treated at a pH below 3.5. In examples the oxidizing agents are (a) 5 per cent aqueous potassium permanganate, (b) 5 per cent aqueous sodium dichromate, (c) 30 per cent hydrogen peroxide and (d) chlorine. Specification 620,415 is referred to.
