696,868. Fishing reels. SHAKESPEARE CO. Jan. 2, 1952, No. 137/52. Class 48. A fishing reel has a spool 27 associated with a rotatable line-winding member 8 and mounted on a spindle 12 rotatably and reciprocatingly housed in a casing 1, the winding member 8 having a gear 20 driven by a manually operable driving gear 5 and means 36, 39, 43 being provided for axially reciprocating the spindle 12 on rotation of the driving gear 5 in'the line-winding direction W and for actuating and holding the spool 27 in projected position, Fig. 3, for casting, when the driving gear 5 is urged in the opposite direction. As shown the spool 27 comprises two flange members 28, 30 having outwardly bent edges 29, 31 respectively, the edge 29 having a brush face 33 which bears against the inner surface of a cylindrical line winding member 8 to prevent entry of the line therebetween. The spool is fixed on one end of the spindle 12, and the member 8 is secured coaxially to a bevel gear 20 rotatable on the spindle, the other end of the spindle being slidably keyed in a sleeve 15 having a flange 16 rotatable between adjustable friction members 17, 18 in a bearing 7 of the casing 1. The driving gear 5, which is operated by a handle 4, has a wearplate 41 housed in a recess 42 in its inner face, and a curved slot 43 in the plate 41 serves to guide one end of a driving pin 39, the other end of which is engaged with a scotch yoke 36 on the spindle 12. The slot 43 is positioned with one end 45 radially outwardly of its other end 44 so that rotation of the gear 5 in line-winding direction causes reciprocation of the spindle 12, and actuation of the gear 5 in the opposite direction brings end 45 of the slot 43 into engagement with the pin 39 to effect projection of the spool to the casting position. The spool is held in this position since complete rotation of the gear 5 in the said opposite direction is prevented by a stop 121 on the spindle engaging the inner face of the gear 20. Line-winding is effected by a reversible finger member 34 screwed to the periphery of the member 8, the brush face 33 on the spool flange 28 being arranged to prevent snagging of the line with finger 34 during casting.
