Abstract

The fibres of a fabric are strengthened to make it more water-resistant by impregnation with a polymeric vinyl acetate emulsion containing a maleate prepared as follows:-3300 pts. water, 37 pts. polyvinyl alcohol, 15 pts. sodium bicarbonate, and 30 pts. sodium lauryl sulphate are mixed and heated to 135-140 DEG F. 1953 pts. of vinyl acetate monomer and 18 pts. ammonium persulphate are then added and the mixture held at 138-140 DEG F. for 30 mins. 446 pts. of di-2-ethyl butyl maleate monomer are then added slowly, and the temperature is again held at 138-140 DEG F. for 30 mins., after which it is allowed to rise to 185 DEG F. for final reaction. Also disclosed in examples are adhesive compositions as follows:-(2) adhesive based on an oil-modified alkyd resin and prepared by mixing and heating to 450 DEG F. 660 pts. dehydrated castor oil, 1060 pts. linseed free fatty acids, 595 parts glycerine, and 1130 pts. phthalic anhydride; after 2-3 hrs. the product is cooled to 400 DEG F. and 550 pts. xylol are added; other drying oils, e.g. oiticica, tung, perilla and soyabean, may also be used; (3) adhesive based on oil-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin and prepared by mixing 270 pts. tung oil, and 90 parts oil-soluble phenol-formaldehyde resin and heating at 450 DEG F. for 40-50 mins.; the product is cooled to 400 DEG F. and 110 pts. xylol and 110 pts. of mineral spirits are added.
