In order to isolate vibrations due to the rapid contact' with the work or with one another of the work-engaging parts (e.g. presser-foot, feeddog, throat-plate), these parts, or members immediately supporting them, are each formed in two sections with an interposed layer or section of relatively soft and yielding material such as rubber, which may be bonded to the two sections. This construction also gives the advantage that the work-engaging parts of the presser-foot and feed-dog can yield slightly to make contact with the work and to conform with cross-seams or other irregularities in it. In the arrangement shown, the throat-plate 38 is bedded on strips 59, or a gasket, of rubber or the like in a rebated aperture in the work-bed 10 and secured thereto by screws 60 which pass through clearance holes in the plate 38 and have rubber or other vibration absorbing washers under their heads; the work-engaging parts 32, 42, of the presser-foot and feed-dog respectively are attached to their carrying parts 39, 44 through bonded layers of rubber 41, 45; and the shank 44 of the feed-dog is secured in a troughshaped member 48 of rubber in a recess in the feed-bar section 50, being adjustably secured to the latter by a screw 47 passing through a clearance slot in the part 44 and having a rubber washer under its head. The feed-bar section 50 is adjustably connected to the main section 27 by screws 51, 52 respectively engaging a hole and a slot in the section 50. The section 27 of the feed-bar may be divided into two parts connected by a rubber layer. Various modified forms of mounting for the feed dog and presserfoot are described and shown, also a rubbersoled feed-foot.
