A throat plate comprises a carrier plate 19 formed with an opening having two inclined surfaces 24, a wear plate 26 engaged by the presser foot and having complementary inclined surfaces 33, and flexible rubber-like cushioning material disposed between the surfaces 24 and 33 and preferably bonded thereto.
