Abstract

A core of an electrical resistance heating element is composed of silicon carbide or a mixture thereof with a minor proportion of a silicoaluminous material (e.g. fired clay), and its surface is coated with a refractory insulating material. Preferred prefired core compositions are 100 to 70 per cent. silicon carbide and 0 to 30 per cent. clay. A temporary binder (e.g. starch or a silicon ester) is used when silicon carbide only forms the core. Preferred coating compositions are clay with sillimanite or alumina or a zirconia-magnesia mixture, the clay being 20 to 30 per cent. of the composition. When the coating is applied by slip casting, sodium silicate and carbonate are added.
