Class 18 Guiding and feeding mechanism of a tape dispenser is provided in the cover 1 and base 2 of the dispenser so that by raising the cover a roll of tape can be replaced and its initial length laid over the guiding mechanism in the base which when the cover is replaced co-operates with the upper mechanism to feed the tape from the dispenser. Fixed and movable cutting blades are provided, one of which is pivotally mounted at one end adjacent and in contact with the corresponding end of the fixed blade. Mechanism for predetermining a length of tape to be dispensed is also provided. The roll 6 is loosely supported in the base and the tape is fed over a roller 14 mounted on an arm 15 pivoted in the base 2 and spring loaded to urge the roller upwardly thereby pressing the tape into contact with a feed roller 16 in the cover 1. The tape then passes over the lower blade 8 of the severing device and into contact with a brush 11 for moistening the adhesive side of the tape. The feed roller 16 which projects through a guide plate 17 is driven in the feeding direction only by a gear 21 which itself is rotated by a segmental plate 22 having teeth on its curved surface. The plate is pivoted to a supporting plate 18 carried by the cover 1 and is operated by a hand lever 24 which is situated outside the cover. A fiat coil spring 31 serves to return the plate 22 after it has been operated by the lever 24. Projecting from the plate is a pin 33 which as the plate 22 is rotated may engage in notches 36, 37 of a slidable bar 34 thereby limiting the movement of the plate 22 and determining the amount of tape to be dispensed. Alternatively, a pin on the plate may engage the end of an adjustable rod which is screw threaded and slidable in either direction by a correspondingly screw threaded sleeve engaging the rod and being rotated by hand, an indicator being revolved at the same time to indicate the length of tape dispensed for any adjustment. Mounted on the plate 22 is a slide 47 which in its initial position engages a pin 44 and raises one end of a latch 42. As the plate is rotated the latch falls and engages an arm 40 secured to a shaft 39 and prevents the shaft from rotating and a second arm 38 secured thereto from engaging the upper blade 13 of the severing mechanism. As the plate further rotates a pin 58 engages a cocking arm 54 which is rotated to deflect the end 52 of a lever 51 to cause a spring 49 on the shaft 39 to wind up one end of the spring being in engagement with the arm 38. The cocking arm 54 latches the lever 51 in its operative position until the plate 22 is returned to its initial position and after a length of tape has been dispensed whereupon the slide 47 engages the pin 44 and releases the catch 42, the arm 38, under the influence of the spring 49, actuating the upper blade 13 to sever the tape. The cutter blades may be located in the cover or base or may be separately mounted on either but being operatively associated when the cover and casing are brought together.
