694,277. Moulding and casting processes. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. July 17, 1951 [Aug. 4, 1950], No. 16907/51. Class 83 (i). Moulds.-A crank-shaft or other metal article is made by casting in a thin-walled, permeable, refractory-base mould, allowing at least areas to be heat-treated to solidify and then applying to said areas coolant in quantity and for a time sufficient to give the desired heat treatment. A thin shell mould 14 made from phenol formaldehyde resin in the known manner is placed in spring clamps 13 in a steel box 11 which has manifolds 18 with projecting pipes 20 to direct cooling air, steam, inert gas, atomized water, &c. on to selected areas of the shell 14. The space 10 between the shell and box is filled with shot or granular material. Cores.-The invention may also be applied to cores.
