Abstract

PURPOSE:To make positioning of chill blocks rapidly and easily by providing holes for mounting a connecting bar on the side opposite from the chill forming surface and make the mounting and dismounting of the connecting bar free at the time of setting the chill blocks for surface hardening of castings in a mold. CONSTITUTION:At the time of casting a crankshaft or the like, the surfaces of cams are chilled to improve their hardness, hence adrasion resistance. To this end, chill blocks 12 are disposed to the cam parts to quickly cool the cam parts. The chill bloks 12 sre used as much as the number of cams to make segmental dies. In this case, holes 15 into which a connecting jig 13 is entered are provided on the side opposite from the mold surfaces 11 of the chill blocks 12, and the engaging parts 14 of the jig 13 are inserted therein through the notches 16 in the upper part thereof, thence the jig 13 is rotated 90 deg., and the chill blocks 12 are fixed to the jig 13. These are mounted to the sand mold of the crankshaft and are accurately positioned in a manner that the mold surfaces 11 face the cam parts, after which the jig 13 is rotated 90 deg. again to the original position and is removed from the chill blocks 12. Finally, sand is packed and the mold mounted with the chill blocks is manufactured.
