Abstract

694,053. Tube joints. GRILL FLOORS, Ltd. July 20, 1951 [Sept. 29, 1950; May 8, 1951], Nos. 23907/50 and 10805/51. Class 99 (i). Aligned tubes 10, 12 such as for hand-rails, are connected by an expansible spigot comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical members 14, 16, the spigot being expanded to grip the tubes by an expander accessible through a hole 32 in the tube 10, engaging both members, and extending into the hole to prevent rotary and axial movement of the spigot during the coupling operation. The expander comprises a screw 26 which screws into the member 14 and has a reduced plain stem 28, engaging a hole in the member 16. To ensure gripping of both tubes the spigot is tapered away from the end within the tube 10 as at 34 to a point that lies within the tube 12. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a tapered pin is driven through opposite holes in one tube and through a tapered hole in the spigot formed by aligned grooves in the flat faces of the spigot members. The pin is arranged at an angle to the axis that is slightly smaller than a right angle.
