Abstract

693,492. Wrapping apparatus. LIPTON (OVERSEAS), Ltd., and RUDDY, A. F. W. June 29, 1951 [March 29, 1950], No. 7865/50. Class 94(i). A machine for sleeving packages comprises a former providing an open-topped cavity which can be lined by a sheet destined to form the sleeve and in which the package to be sleeved can be housed, and a pair of plates mounted for movement towards each other out of inoperative positions so as partially to cover the cavity and thus fold over the upper surface of the package in the cavity the portions of the sheet which project from the cavity, the former being mounted for movement towards and away from a position in which the cavity lies beneath sealing means mounted so as to be brought to bear on the folded portions of the sheet through the space between the plates as a consequence of the movement of the former towards them. A sheet 20 of thermoplastic wrapping material is positioned over an open-topped former 14, mounted on a slidable carriage 12, by guides 18 on folding members 15, 16 slidably mounted, on the carriage 12, adjacent the top of the former 14. A packet of tea, or other article, is then placed on top of the sheet 20 and pressed with it down into the former 14 causing the sheet to be folded up against the sides of the article into a U formation. The operator then moves forward an actuating bar 24 having cam surfaces 28, 29 thereon which engage lever mechanisms 34, 35 respectively to move the folding members 15, 16 inwardly over the top of the former 14 to fold the upstanding flaps of the wrapping sheet one over the other on to the top of the packet. The bar 24 is connected to the carriage 12 through lost motion pin-and-slot connection 30 so that-when the folders 15, 16 have completed their inward movement the carriage 12 as a whole is moved towards and beneath a heated sealing bar 42, pivotally suspended from a bell-crank 44. A stop 48 on this crank 44 is engaged by the carriage 12 to rock the bar 42 down into the gap between the folders 15, 16 to seal the overlapped edges of the wrapping sheet. The bar 24 is then pulled back and the sealing bar and folders allowed to move back to their original positions. The sleeved packet may then be removed. The wrapping sheet 20 may be of paper or metal foil and be gummed, and the sealing means may comprise a roller caused to move along the length of the seam. To wrap a smaller packet an insert 54 may be placed in the former 14 to reduce its size.
