In means for feeding granular or powdered material from a region at relatively low pressure to one at a higher pressure of the kind having a rotatable pocketed carrier plate a each pocket a<SP>1</SP> of which is brought successively during rotation into position beneath a supply pipe o to receive material at relatively low pressure and between ports f<SP>3</SP>, e<SP>3</SP>, the former of which admits a blast of gas at high pressure and the other of which is connected to the high pressure conveying system h through which the material is to be conveyed, sealing pads e, f of a rotary character are provided at the blast receiving position. The pads are held in contact with the plate by springs e<SP>1</SP>, f<SP>1</SP> or by pneumatically or hydraulically actuated means and the ports e<SP>a</SP>, f<SP>3</SP> are formed in them. They are driven from the shaft b of the plate a by gearing k, l and are designed to cover at least three pockets a<SP>1</SP> at a time. The pads may be of bronze, aluminium or lignum vitae and the plate a of harder material such as chromium plate. nitrogenisable or special alloy steels. The bottom of each pocket is closed by a lightly spring-loaded poppet valve a<SP>2</SP> or by a porous filter. The plate a rotates between cast iron or bearing metal discs m, n which are spaced from the housing c and are urged inwards by springs, e.g. p. A scavenging port is provided to release the air from a pocket after discharge of the material.
