Abstract
692,981. Automatic weft control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 21, 1952 [March 22, 1951], No. 7359/52. Class 38 (iv). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL (b)] Apparatus for straightening the weft of moving woven material comprises two rotating lamps passing light through the material on to two photo-cells, whose outputs, consisting of an H.F. undulating voltage of L.F. varying magnitude, are compared individually with a standard voltage and combined to produce skew and bow correcting voltages. The lamps 9, 11, Fig. 1, shining through opposite edges of a width of the material 23, are driven by identical gears from a motor 2 which also drives a reference signal generator 28. The beams 21, 22, which are made elongated by suitablyshaped filaments are focused on the material 23 and fall on photo-cells 26, 27 whose output voltages are as shown in Fig. 4, and are demodulated to pass the upper L.F. envelope only. The modulation voltages are phase-compared separately with the reference signal from 28, giving a D.C. output voltage whose magnitude and polarity depend on the magnitude and direction of the phase angle difference. Thus with a skewed weft, the D.C. voltages are equal in magnitude and sign, and are added to actuate a skew control motor 54, Fig. 11, and when the weft is bowed, the D.C. voltages are equal in magnitude but opposite in sign, and their difference is made to actuate a bow control motor 56.
