Class 44 In a revolving barrel lock having tumblers housed transversely in the barrel, the tumblers normally projecting beyond the barrel.into engagement with a housing in which the barrel rotates and being retractable into the barrel by insertion of an appropriately contoured key, all the tumblers are identical in size and shape and are adapted to be adjusted within the barrel by the pre-insertion of a contoured control member, so that the tumblers will be retracted into the barrel only when a key having a contour complementary to that of the'control member is inserted in the lock. In the arrangement shown, in which tabs 16 on sliding spring-loaded tumblers 13 in a barrel 10 co-operate with diametrically arranged slots 12 in a casing 11 and in which each of the tumblers is slidable in a compartment formed by partitions dividing a slot 14 passing through the barrel, a floating lever 20 is pivotally mounted on each tumbler 13, one end of the lever bearing against a contoured control member 23 which is slidably received in a slot 22 in the barrel and the other end bearing against an intermediate sliding member 24 having a lug which projects into the path of a key slot 27. Each tumbler 13 is formed with a slot 28 to permit passage of a key 29 through the slot 27 and to permit movements of the tumbler. In operation, insertion of key 29 displaces the members 24 which rock the levers 20 and so effect displacement of the tumblers in dependance upon the contours of the key and the control member. The latter is inserted from the rear of the barrel and is retained by a removable locking plate on the end of the barrel. In a modification, the member 24 may be omitted. In further modifications, the pivot for the lever 20 may be at one end hereof, the other end of which is engaged by the key, the control member then engaging an intermediate point on the lever, or alternatively the lever may be pivotally mounted at one end on the tumbler, the other end being engaged by the control member and the key or intermediate member engaging a mid-point on the lever. In a further modification, the lever may be pivoted on the intermediate member to engage a projection on the tumbler and to also engage the control member.
