Abstract

692,666. Automatic temperature control systems. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. March 17, 1952 [April 30, 1951], No. 10039/51. Class 38 (iv). In a system for automatically controlling the exhaust gas temperature of a gas turbine, parallel-connected thermocouples responsive to exhaust gas temperature and temperature setting means are associated with the input of a magnetic amplifier the output of which controls a solenoid-operated spill valve which by-passes fuel so as to maintain the exhaust gas temperaat the set value. As shown, fuel passing through a filter 12 is delivered by a pump 11 through a flow control unit 13, an isolator valve (not shown) and a distributer 15 to the combustion unit (not shown) of an aircraft gas turbine. By-passing of fuel from the output of the isolator valve to the pump input is controlled by a spill valve 21 operated by a solenoid 27. To maintain exhaust gas temperature constant the output of parallel connected thermocouples 32 responsive to that temperature is applied, in opposition to the output of a D.C. bridge 33, to the input of a three-stage magnetic amplifier 50, 51, 52 controlling the energization of solenoid 27 acting on armature 28. The first two stages of the magnetic amplifier at least are push-pull operated but the output of the third stage is unidirectional. The temperature datum is adjustable by a controller 35 which is adjusted simultaneously with the engine throttle acting on fuel flow unit 13. Bridge resistor 42 is temperature-variable to compensate for ambient temperature variations. Controller 35 has positions corresponding to starting, 35d, takeoff, 35a, climb, 35b, and cruising, 35c. Excessive deviation of exhaust gas temperature from the datum causes energization of a relay 56 by the output of the second stage 51 of the magnetic amplifier to operate an audible or visual warning circuit 57.
