691,649. Making tubes. RAUSING, R. May 24, 1951 [Dec. 30, 1950], No. 12189/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXVIII] A vertical frame 10 carries at its upper end a guide roller 12 over which runs a continuous web 14, e.g. of metal foil, that is formed into a tube by longitudinally spaced shaping elements 18, 20 the upper element 18 having an opening extending in the direction of movement of the web, one of the edges 22 of the opening being turned outwardly to cause one edge 28 of the web to overlap the other edge 30, and the element 20 being continuous and preferably internally tapered and conforming to the shape of the tube. Means, such as an electric element 24 having a slot 28 through which passes the edge 30 of the web, heat the edges of the web to a sealing temperature and means, e.g. a spring-biased roller 36 co-operating with a roller carried on a sleeve 48 inside the tube, press the overlapping edges of the web together to seal the joint; alternatively, there is means for applying adhesive to at least one of the edges of the web. The finished tube 16 may be drawn through the apparatus by driven rolls 62 co-operating with rollers inside the tube and mounted on the sleeve 48. The roller 12, together with the elements 18, 20, may be laterally adjustable, and the web may be tensioned by a braking device before passing over the roller; alternatively, a curved guide surface, or adjustable guide bars 64, between the roller and the element 18 may be used to tension the web. In a modification, the shaping elements comprise concave rollers carried in annular holders.
