Abstract
691,566. Eddy-current brakes. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 5, 1951, No. 2791/51. Class 35. [Also in Group XIII] A heat-boosting apparatus for a liquid-cooled vehicle engine 12 comprises a power-absorption device 37 driven by a power-transmitting element, such as 14, of the engine, and having an electromagnetic device comprising a rotor 16 and a stationary drum in the form of a fluid jacket 36, a fluid-circulating system connecting the jacket with the cooling-system of the engine and hand or foot-operated means for controlling the device being provided. In the construction shown, the rotor includes two annular members 20, 22, encircling an electromagnetic coil 26 and mounted on a hub 24 of the shaft 14. The coil is supplied with current, upon the initial depression of a pedal device associated with the pedal of the main braking system of the vehicle, by a brush 28, and the members 20, 22, which form the field body of the unit, are each provided with pole arms 32. Thus, upon the initial depression of the pedal the coil is energized and the eddy currents set up between the rotor and jacket 36 not only provide an auxiliary braking system for the vehicle but serve to heat the fluid in the jacket. The circulating system includes a pump 51, conduits 42, 44, radiator 48, thermostat 53 with a connection 57 to the radiator and by-pass connection 58 to the conduit 42, and a bleed conduit 59 leading from jacket 36 to the thermostat to provide a quick response of the latter, all these elements being arranged as shown and the liquid being circulated through the system as indicated by the arrows. In a modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the pump and thermostat are arranged in a different manner, the thermostat, which has no by-pass in this case, being located between the engine block and radiator inlet, and the pump being between the radiator outlet and the inlet of unit 37.
