Abstract

690,938. Molecular models. PLESCH, P. H. April 19, 1951. [May 8, 1950] No. 11357/50. Class 146 (ii). Molecular models comprise truncated spheres, such as 1 or 8, representing atoms, with holes in the truncated surfaces, which are cast or moulded of a resilient material such as synthetic resin, vulcanised rubber or vulcanised sponge rubber, and short lengths of rod as 7 or 14, of material which. has considerable friction with that of the spheres, and of cross-section to fit tightly into the holes, are used to join the spheres together to represent complete molecules. Fig. 2 represents a carbon atom 1 in resilient rubber having four surfaces 2 (not shown) 3, 4 and 5 each having a round hole 6 which is engaged by a round rod 7 of hard rubber. Fig. 4 represents a carbon atom 8 having three faces, 9 (not shown) and 10 similar to the faces 2 - 5 and with round holes 11, the third face 12 being slightly larger with an oval hole 13 to take an oval section rod 14 representing a double band. A triple bond is represented bv a triangular hole and sectioned rod. Groups of atoms which recur frequently are represented by a single moulded unit ; Fig. 8 shows a benzene nucleus 19 having six faces 21 with central holes 22. To represent long bonds, connecting rods may be joined by a disc of hard rubber having slots which may have enlarged ends for slipping over the rods. Atoms of various elements may be distinguished by different dyes incorporated in the moulding composition.
