Abstract
689,310. Aircraft carriers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BAXTER, A. L., and MEACOCK, J. H. Sept. 25, 1950. [Oct. 7, 1949] No. 25832/49. Class 113 (ii). In an aircraft carrier deck edge lift the platform is moved vertically by chains secured to the platform corners and operated by hydraulic jiggers. As shown, the platform 7 may be raised to the level of flight deck 6 or stowed against the ship side 1, by raising of the outer edge. The operating chains on the four corners of the platform, e.g. 15, 17 are controlled by four separate jiggers, e.g. 42, secured to the frame of the vessel. The outer chains, e.g. 17, are supported by the derricks, 23, at each end of the platform. Each derrick moves in a plane perpendicular to the ship's side, being pivotted at its base to the ship frame and is associated with a storing jigger 25. A synchronising shaft is provided to which pulleys carrying the outer chains are fixed and pulleys carrying the inner chains are clutched. To prevent the platform swinging away from the ship, the inner corners carry guide rollers 12 which engage vertical channel shaped guide rails.
