Abstract

688,503. Packing railway sleepers. SCHEUCHZER, A. Dec. 4, 1950. [Dec. 12, 1949] No. 29594/50. Class 104 (ii). For levelling railway rails coarse gravel is projected into a space formed between a previously raised sleeper and the ballast thereunder by means of compressed air. Compressed air fed through a flexible pipe 7 to ejector channels 10 on the underside of a pipe 5 blows gravel, fed from a container 4 to an upper channel 9, into a space formed between the underside of the sleeper 13 and the ballast B. A gauge 15 is placed on the end of a raised sleeper so that a nozzle 6 fitted on a pipe 5 can be aligned with an orifice 18 to direct gravel into the space to be filled. A rubber sleeve 60 on the end of a nozzle 6 prevents the escape of air and gravel. A bar 19 may be used to limit the extent of the packed gravel within the space beneath the sleeper 13. Nozzle arrangements are described for feeding gravel in either a horizontal direction parallel to a wooden or steel sleeper from the sleeper side between the rail and sleeper end or in an upwardly directed manner parallel and perpendicular to the sleeper. Fig. 11 shows a bell mouthed nozzle to spread gravel fanwise. The gravel flow from the container 4 to the channel 9 can be varied by operating flaps 20 linked to a lever 21. The channel 10 may be divided over part of its length to form two smaller channels arranged below, Fig. 4 (not shown), laterally of, or above the channel 9. More than two channels arranged in any of the above manners may be used.
