Abstract

687,983. Winding yarn. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. Dec. 6, 1950 [Jan. 30, 1950], No. 29920/50. Class 120(ii) In a machine for winding yarn on to a package core, a driving drum for rotating the package core being supported for movement relative to and transversely of the core, there is provided a pair of movable elements in frictional engagement and means, operated by the transverse movement of drum and package to move the elements in opposite directions thereby frictionally to damp the transverse movement in both directions. The package P, wound on the tube T and driven by a drum 2 rotated by a chain 8, is carried by a frame 15 pivoting about a shaft 20, the frame 15 having an extension arm 66 carrying a spring-pressed plunger 70 which bears, with friction, against a disc-like surface 45 moved about a shaft 40 by linkage 53, 55, 59 as the package P grows, the arrangement being that the motions of the plunger 70 and disc 45 are in opposite directions and serve to damp out oscillations by restricting periodic separation of the package from the drum. Attached to the disc 45, upon an arm 49, is a counterweight 56 so arranged that as the package P grows, the effective weight of the counterweight grows in proportion. The traverse guide 30 is reciprocated by a cam &c. and is carried by flat plates 33 sliding between pairs of grooved rollers 34, 35. The frictional damping motion described above may be applied to the thread traverse of a positively-driven winding spindle, wherein the traverse frame moves transversely of the spindle as the package grows.
