Abstract

In a method of removing the surface of steel by scaling during heating, the heated steel is subjected to an atmosphere including air, and containing between 4 and 50 per cent of water vapour by volume. Preferred temperatures are in the range 600-1100 DEG C. The percentage of water-vapour used is determined by the amount of scaling required, and especially for the treatment of high carbon chromium steel should be at least 15 per cent.
