Abstract

Aluminium fluoride is obtained by heating hydrate of alumina through a gradually increasing temperature range in an atmosphere of hydrofluoric acid gas for a period of at least one hour, the lower limit of temperature being 175--300 DEG C., preferably 250 DEG C., and the upper limit 500--600 DEG C. The process may be carried out continuously in an externally heated rotating tube made of iron, steel, or aluminium. The conditions of the heat treatment for the production of aluminium fluoride are those best suited for the dehydration of aluminium hydrate. Specifications 328,688, [Class 1 (iii)], and 383,780 are referred to.
